The Finnish navy disposes of large quantities of obsolete personal computers annually. The methods of disposal are well regulated and predictable. There seems to be little concern, however that new methods of disposal as well as reuse should be considered. From the financial point view it is vital to dispose of the obsolete material as cost-effectively as possible. This thesis explores disposal procedures for obsolete computers by evaluating the current disposal procedures and examining new disposal options such as selling or giving obsolete computers to employees. For this thesis I plan to interview some major companies to find out how PC disposal is conducted in the civil sector. The main goal is to examine cost-effective alternatives to the current disposal procedures. The study shows the most cost-effective alternative for disposal of obsolete Navy personal computer is trading them in during purchase of new It-assets.
