Nuorten salibandypelaajien nuuskan käyttö ja siihen yhteydessä olevat tekijät

There has been a rise in the popularity of snus among Finnish adolescents, while the prevalence of smoking has declined. Previous studies have also shown that the use of snus is common among athletes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of snus use among Finnish junior floorball players and the factors that are associated with snuffing habits. The data were collected using an electronic questionnaire that the participants answered in December 2016 and January 2017. The study sample included 449 floorball players (302 boys; 147 girls; mean age 16.7 years). Data were analyzed using cross tabulations, the chi-square test and logistic regression. The results indicate that 39 percent of the floorball players, who were aged from 13 to 20 years, had tried snus. More boys reported that they had tried using snus (52 %) than girls (13 %). The boys were also far more likely to use snus regularly (21 %) than the girls, none of whom used snus regularly. Over 40 percent of the boys who had tried snus reported that they continued using the substance and ended up becoming regular users, which means that they used snus at least once a week. The desire to try the substance and offers they received from teammates were the major reasons for the first use, while continued use was mostly explained by the relaxing effect of the snus. A full 45 percent of the players reported that there was no agreement of the use of snus during the team’s events, and only 14 percent reported that their coaches or team staff members had informed them of the dangers of snus use. Players whose coaches or team staff members had not forbidden them to use snus were almost twice as likely to have tried it (OR: 1.60; Cl:1.06–2.40 ) than players whose coaches or team staff members had forbidden the use of it. The results of this study suggest that the frequency of snus use among Finnish junior floorball players, especially among boys, requires more attention from the floorball clubs and the Finnish Floorball Federation. Team coaches should be instructed to inform the players of the dangers of this substance, and there should be clear and consistent rules that make it mandatory for players to refrain from using snus while they are engaged in team activities.
