ABSTRACT

Kangasmäki, S. 2018. The experiences of the conscripts on physical training in the Karelia Brigade during special and unit training periods. Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Jyväskylä, Master’s thesis in Sport Pedagogy, 51pp., 3 appendices.

The aim of this Master's Thesis was to find out how the conscripts have experienced their physical training in Karelia Brigade and what kind of meanings they give to the physical training during their service. The objective was also to find out whether the current standard of physical training for conscripts (PEHENKOS 2012) is valid and whether the experiences of the conscripts meet the standards of training defined in the norm. In addition, the purpose was to find out whether based on the experiences gained new facts emerged or, if there were facts which according to the presumption were supposed to be important, but the experiences gained showed the opposite. The research was carried out as qualitative research. The starting point of the study was the use of a hermeneutical investigation. The material was processed by content specification. Ultimately, a light discourse analysis has been made for themes that emerged from the specification. Karelia Brigade was used as an example unit for this study. The brigade trains about 4000 conscripts each year in 17 companies. The study was conducted for six companies of Karelia Brigade and their conscripts of the first contingent of 2017. The material was collected from weekly programs and by interviewing conscripts during their special and unit training periods. A total of 18 conscripts were interviewed about their experiences on physical training. In addition, the study analyzed the weekly programs of these units, based on the actual number of physical training hours within the programs. The results showed that only one company fulfills the number of hours of physical training as instructed by the norm during both the special and the unit training periods. At its weakest, during the special training period, one company organized only 10 hours of physical training instead of 35 hours instructed in the norm. During the unit training period, the hours of physical training are more uniform in all units relative to the 21 hours instructed in the norm.

Conscripts experienced physical training as a positive experience. The sports venues of Karelia brigade were praised, and sports venues were felt helpful in the versatility of sporting activities. The discourse highlighted that physical training enhanced the group spirits of wartime units. The more time the instructor has spent planning the content of physical training, the more important conscripts experienced their service. Good physical training includes, for example, skill tricks. The most popular species were ball games and obstacle course competitions.
