Programming was introduced as a part of the primary school curriculum in the fall of 2016. Teaching programming applies to all primary school teachers from the first grade of primary school to the ninth grade of the secondary school. ICT skills are not the strongest skills of all teachers and the concept of the programming may not be clear to everyone. This can create challenges for teachers themselves as well as for their training. This study examines teachers´ pre-existing capabilities in teaching programming and finds out their ICT skills regarding programming. Also, it is examined what kind of in-service training has been offered to teachers and what kind of view teachers get from them. Questionnaires were used to obtain the material with a focus in primary schools in Ääneseutu. The data were analyzed qualitatively and due to small number of respondents, the statistical description was used instead of the quantitative analysis. The study revealed that teachers´ programming skills and ICT skills varied a lot. The starting levels and abilities of the teachers to teach programming were different. In-service training may have had an impact on teachers´ programming skills. The information obtained as a result of the research helps to understand the starting levels of teachers. In addition, the results indicate the level at which teachers training should be started, from the lowest starting level or higher.
