Social construction of gender in the speech of teachers of an upper secondary school

The main purpose of this study is to clarify what kind of discourses the teachers of an upper secondary school use and what kind of social gender they construct when they talk about gender. The goal is to expose the discourses which construct girls and boys unequally. The interviews are analysed by using the method of discourse analysis.

In the talks of the teachers there can be found three different discourses, of which the two first, tradition discourseand science discourse, renew social gender where men and women have different roles both at homes and at work. The tradition discourse constructed the boys as brave whereas the girls were constructed as conscientious. The science discourseconstructed social reality, where math was better suited for the boys and language studies cohered better with the girls. The third discourse which was used was the ability discourse. It wasn't used to renew the differences between women and men, but to construct social reality where everybody has the same possibilities to success regardless of gender.
