The thesis was an assignment by the sports section in the municipality of Sipoo. The municipality wanted to know what the children think about their new sport event, sportsschool. The sport school was arranged for the second time in the year 2010. The schools aim is to activate the children during their first two weeks of the summer holydays so that the children hopefully stay active during the rest of the holydays. The sport school also wants to offer new sports. It is destined for children in the age between ten and twelve. The examinations main goal was to find out if the children enjoy their time spent in the sport school and what it is that makes them motivated to practice physical activity. The thesis had two other goals as well, to find out if the school made them more interested to continue to be active in the future and also to get suggestions for improvement. The theoretical framework was based on literature about how physical activity affects children’s development, about the factors that affects the motivation to physical activity and generally how active children are and how active they should be. The thesis also brings up two different motivation theories, Maslows and McClellands. The research used questionnaires that contained open and closed questions. Every child that participated in the school took part in the research. The population of the research consisted of 21 boys. The survey was quantitative. The results of the study showed that everyone enjoyed their time in the school. The biggest cause that motivated the children was the schools whole substance. 15 boys got interested of some sport during the school and 13 of them would probably take part in something similar if arranged regularly. In other words, the sport-school did reach its goals.
