This thesis works as a research for possibilities of implementation of virtualization in-formation technologies at Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland (SLS) with considerations of the organization’s needs, expectations and current infrastructure. Current, already ac-quired server virtualization solution and the experience of its implementation are taken into account. Because of virtualization is a relatively new technology it is necessary to research different functionality principles and solutions of it. The thesis is divided into four parts of which the first part primarily describes the current infrastructure and prob-lems which SLS is expecting to solve using virtualization. Part two presents the most cen-tral components which different virtualization solutions are using. Part three goes into complete solutions which are offered by the largest suppliers at the moment and part four evaluates how these solutions fit for SLS. The main purpose with this thesis is to give a view of virtualization technologies and help SLS to begin further research possible acqui-sition and commissioning of virtualization technology. Mainly one can divide modern virtualization solutions into three different categories, those are application virtualization, partial virtualization and full virtualization. All these categories have own advantages and disadvantages though none of them is superior to another. The thesis describes solutions manufactured by Microsoft, Citrix and VMware, also solutions with open source code developed in Linux environment. The thesis is mainly a literature study but also bases on experience of the already acquired virtual server environment.
