PUHTIA PIHALTA : Esteettömän piha-alueen viitteellinen suunnitelma Palvelukeskus Kaskeen

The aim of the study was to create a garden plan that was health promoting and obstacle-free. The plan was made for a client called Palvelukeskus Kaski (Service Centre Kaski) in Pihtipudas. The wishes and needs of the staff and the occupants were taken into account in the planning of the garden. The goal was that the aged occupants, staff and the visitors would enjoy their time in the garden and that they would also have enjoyable activities in the area. An addi-tional aim was that the study could be utilized in the planning of similar garden areas. The reference section includes various new literature sources concerning the subject. The garden area was planned according to the regulations concerning obstacle-free environments by taking into account safety, stimulation and pleasantness. The obstacle-free dimension was taken into account in the planning of paths, railings, patios, benches, exercise equipment and elevated plant areas. The actual building of the garden area was not part of the work. As our population grows older, the number of aged people living in the assisted living sector will increase. These people will have multiple illnesses and deficits in their ability to function. Maintaining and improving the ability to function through different methods will become emphasized. With the help of exercise and a safe and stimulating garden area we will not only support the different areas of functioning but also promote people’s health. Garden areas are usually the only places where the people in the assisted living sector can be outdoors. If the increase of physical activity is successful, the care of the aged citizens will be cheaper to society, not to mention the meaning that the activity has to that person. Finding the investors and making vegetation plans could serve as a continuation to the project. One can also ask how the utilization of the previous garden area has begun and if the area is functional and obstacle- free from the users’ point of view. In addition, what are the possible obstacles and how can they be removed?
