Transporting Swimmers to Temporary Training Places : How much time and money can be saved and emissions reduced by combining transportations

The goal of the thesis was to study how a sports team, Swimming Jyväskylä (SWIM) handled their junior swimmer transportation to temporary training places while Jyväskylä’s main swimming hall AaltoAlvari was under renovation. The consideration points were money and time savings and reduction of emissions.

The initial situation was that parents were driving only their own children to training places. By driving almost empty cars, the parents would have spent more than six working days amount of time on their child’s hobby in a month, their cars would have consumed fuel worth almost 800 euros a year and one car would have emitted 1,2 tons of carbon dioxide (CO^2) emissions to the environment annually.

In order to minimize the emissions and reduce the time and money consumption, parents would have needed to cooperate with each other. A discussion forum was launched to help parents discuss with each other, but it was not successful. Therefore a web-based transportation system was designed.

The transportation system was not taken into use because of financial issues, but it gave an idea for SWIM how they could combine the transportations. The thesis proved that combining the transportations, parents would have saved almost 40 hours of their own time per month, more than 500 euros of money a year and a car would have emitted 1 ton less of CO^2 emissions annually.
