Freddie Hubbard & Woody Shaw : Soolojen eroavaisuudet ja yhtäläisyydet kappaleessa Sandu

In my thesis, I analyze the trumpet solos of Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw in the blues tune "Sandu", which is the opening track of their joint album Double Take (1985). I identify the characteristics of their improvisational styles on the solos and make observations on similarities and differences between their playing. I focus on comparing Hubbard and Shaw's use of blues and bebop phrases and playing outside the chord changes in their solos. Additionally, I study the instrumental ranges (the distance from the lowest to the highest pitch) of the solos. The basis of my work is my transcriptions of the solos of both trumpeters. I discuss excerpts of the transcriptions in detail and present a diagram that shows the instrumental ranges of the soloists and two tables that indicate the percentages of the trumpetists' use of blues and bebop phrases and playing outside the chord changes. The analysis showed that blues phrases had a big role in both solos. Freddie Hubbard had twice the amount of blues phrases compared to Woody Shaw. Hubbard's musical idiom included also more melodies from the bebop tradition. As was expected, Woody Shaw played outside the chord changes a lot, but I was surprized to discover that Freddie Hubbard did hardly any of that, contrary to my expectations. The analysis of the instrumental range shows that Hubbard's range was wider. On the diagram, the pitches of Hubbard and Shaw proceed through the solos quite similarly.
