Johdatus Rimski-Korsakovin pianokonserttoon : Pianistin näkökulmia

This study focuses on Nikolay Rimski-Korsakov’s Piano Concerto in C sharp minor op. 30. The writer has performed the piece in concerts and the study is written from the perspective of a musician, also considering music historical and pedagogical aspects.

The content is divided into three parts. The first part is about Rimsky-Korsakov’s life, whereas the second part focuses on the composer’s works considering stylistic and historical aspects. The third part describes the Piano Concerto by analysing its form and style as well as technical and pedagogical factors of the composition.

The source material of the study consists mostly of historical music literature and articles along with liner notes from the recordings of the composition. Some parts are written from the writer’s own personal perspective as the performer of the concerto.

The study aims to highlight the seldom-heard Piano Concerto by producing new written publication about the composition in Finnish. This study will hopefully inspire more musicians to work with the concerto. The last part of the study is aimed to pianists and piano pedagogues considering adding the composition either to their own or to their student’s repertoire.

Rimsky-Korsakov was a complex composer personality whose cultural heritage is remarkable. The musical and pianistic merits of the Piano Concerto are undeniable. The piece is versatile with its style and technical demands. The concerto strongly reflects the typical features of Rimsky-Korsakov’s music. The thematic structure and the influence of Franz Liszt is evident. The piano part is demanding both in technical and interpretational aspects.
