This Bachelor’s thesis was commissioned by Apex Automation Oy. The aim of this thesis is to modernize a machine that is already in use and to gather information package regarding safety of machinery. The machine which has to be modernized was made by Apex Automation Oy in 2009 and is in use by a customer. Modernization has to be made because it no longer can be safely used.

This thesis consists of acts, standards and literature related to safety of machinery. Design of the machine must comply with acts related to safety of machinery and set regulations and requirements. Standards are designed to refine and to facilitate the application of the acts. Theoretical part of this thesis consists of requirements of acts what needs to be noted during the design stage of machines safety upgrades and solutions to requirements of the acts presented in machinery standards. The practical part of the study consists of design and implementation of solutions related to requirements of the acts and standards.

As a result, the machines safety issues were modernized to the level required by the acts, as well as the written part is a good information package about machinery safety-related solutions in design.
