This BA thesis introduced and studied Inkeri Sava’s framework for an artistic learning process. This framework, based on holistic learning theory, provided a model for how artistry can turn into art. In the model at first sensory experiences transform into mental experiences, then those experiences transform into conceptual and abstract images in the mind, and finally personal values and perceptions are added to the equation.

In this thesis, Sava’s framework was applied to the artistic part of this BA project: a bistro called Memento Mori. The artistic process of this project was analysed by using Sava’s theoretical notions of an artistic learning process: immediate sensory experiences, individual thought processes, artistic-aesthetic conceptualization, artistic actions, interpretations and meanings. Learning was discussed by diving it into the categories of quantitative, qualitative and structural change, and artistic knowledge.

This discussion served as a tool for analyzing and depicting how the processes of the artist and the recipient meet; a piece of art which can be experienced with one’s senses, is just a stage of an artistic work process, which requires not only concrete skills but also mental skills. This led to a conclusion, that the presented artistic process is the (art) form, not content, and the process can be categorised through its form. The different stages of the process and the skills that are needed in the process – techniques, technical know-how, cognitive and metacognitive skills – can be taught. This is when the process owner monitors the depth of the artistic process with different skills. When fully completed, an artistic process is always a learning process.

The final conclusion was, that art can be defined as art when it expands and develops human’s reality, and makes it more multifaceted and multidimensional.
