Puurakenteisen pientalon suunnittelu : Case: Matokallio

The assignment was to design a low-cost, functional and healthy detached house for the needs of a self-builder. In this bachelor’s thesis three parts of the assignment are presented: architectural design including main drawings, loads on the building and dimensioning of wooden structures. Architecturally the aim was to design a traditional looking small Finnish farmhouse. The interior is built around a fireplace and a chimney. Compared to a typical house the frame of the building is designed as a diagonal braced post structure instead of a plate-stiffened frame. This post structure remains visible from inside. Spaces between the posts are filled with light-clay designed to balance indoor air humidity. As insulation, there is used blown cellulose fiber. Compared to a typical detached house the wind load was somewhat higher, which is due to the location of the house on a hill. Utilization rate of wood structures remained quite low. The dimensioning factor, as in most new detached houses, was insulation values instead of the loads on the building. Over dimensioning was reduced by designing a double frame structure, so that the outer structure generally carries the loads on the outer surface and the internal structure carries the internal loads.
