The purpose of this research was to describe the experiences of nurses on family-oriented nursing in pediatric psychiatric nursing. This research has been accomplished by interviewing four (4) nurses at certain children`s psychiatric unit and two (2) nurses at certain pediatric psychiatric out-patients. This research was con-ducted using a qualitative research method. The material was analyzed using a content analysis method. The first aim of this research is to increase information about experiences of nurses on family-oriented nursing in pediatric psychiatric nursing. The second aim of this research is to get more information about how family-oriented nursing can be developed in pediatric psychiatric nursing. The theoretical bases of this research consist of family, family-oriented nursing and pediatric psychiatric nursing.

According to the results of this research family is the relevant part of pediatric psychiatric nursing. The meaning of family is experienced important by child, family and nursing signification. In the results of this research, pediatric psychiatric nursing is often whole family nursing. In many case, psychiatric problems affect as well other family members. When a family member suffer from mental illness it has a negative influence on whole family life and interaction between the family members.

The results of this research highlight the signification of family-oriented nursing as strengthening child feeling of safety and whole family responsibility in situation. In family-oriented nursing is emphasized collaboration and trust relation between family and nursing people. According this research challenges in family-oriented nursing are facts that result from family, like parents negatively attitude and from nursing perspective lack of resource, like time and labour.

According to the results of this research nurses experience development of pediatric psychiatric nursing very important. As in pediatric psychiatric nursing also in development the point is in family listening.
