The mechanisms that underpin the varied spatial genetic structures exhibited by free-living marine microorganisms remain controversial, with most studies emphasizing a high dispersal capability that should redistribute genetic diversity in contrast to most macroorganisms whose populations often retain a genetic signature of demographic response to historic climate fluctuations. We quantified the European phylogeographic structure of the marine flagellate Oxyrrhis marina and found a marked difference in spatial genetic structure, population demography, and genetic diversity between the northwest Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea that reflects the persistent separation of these regions as well as context-dependent population responses to contrasting environments. We found similar geographic variation in the level of genetic diversity in the sister species Oxyrrhis maritima. Because the capacity for wide dispersal is not always realized, historic genetic footprints of range expansion and contraction persist in contemporary populations of marine microbes, as they do in larger species. Indeed, the well-described genetic effects of climatic variation on macroorganisms provide clear, testable hypotheses about the processes that drive genetic divergence in marine microbes and thus about the response to future environmental change.
Kuvan numero (kala)kirjassa on CLV / 155. Vaaleanpunainen merieläin on muodoltaan epäsäännöllinen.
The aim of this thesis was to find out which requirements and needs dog owners have when they stay at hotels. The aim was also to see if the demand could increase if the hotels offered better services for dog owners. The theory is divided in three parts; service development, quality and customer satisfaction. With the theoretical references as a frame, a quantitative research was prepared. The questionnaire was handed out as a paper for dog owners staying in Helsinki during the Summer 2012. The questionnaire was handed out in Swedish and in Finnish. The survey gave 92 respondents, which were analyzed afterwards. The results showed that dog owner doesn’t know much about pet friendly hotels in Helsinki, and do not know which services they provide. Better marketing and services would increase the demand, and dog owners would be a bigger customer segment for the hotels. The dog owners do not ask for much, small thoughtful things like a water bowl in the room would make the difference. Scandic Hotels, especially Scandic Grand Marina, has a good possibility to be a popular pet friendly hotel.
Helsinki Marina is one of the most attractive guest marinas in Finland. Since the summer of 2010, the marina services have been operated in co-operation by two companies. The marina café also serves as the marina office where the staff will assist both costumers of the café and guests of the marina. The purpose of this thesis is to create an information folder for Helsinki Marina. The information folder will be executed in the form of a project. The folder will consist of information about and instructions for the services of the marina and also information about the services and sights in the local area. I got the idea for this thesis when I realized that we didn’t have all necessary information collected in one source, which meant we had a need for an information folder such as this. The aim of the information folder is to give the customer all the required information and to help the staff during the daily work. The folder can also work as a handbook for new personnel. For the execution of the project I’ve taken support from a theoretical background that consists of information and instruction writing and the basic steps for executing a project. This thesis presents the definition, planning and execution of the project. I will also reflect over the result of the project where I present my own and my colleagues’ thoughts about the context of the folder and of its usefulness in the future. In short, I can say that the folder has received good reviews and we believe the information folder will quickly find its natural role during the upcoming season
The spread of invasive aquatic species is increasing, and thus the risk of disturbances in the ecosystems increase. In the Baltic Sea, the introduced omnivorous Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould 1841) can exist in a wide array of environments, such as the sublittoral sandy bottoms with Zostera marina, where it through predation can have various effects on the community. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate, in an aquarium experiment, how the presence of juvenile Platichthys flesus affects the feeding behaviour of R. harrisii, and how these predators affect the shallow sandy sublittoral macrofauna (Macoma balthica and Bathyporeia pilosa). At the same time, the differences in the abundance of R. harrisii on the sandy bottoms with and without Z. marina was studied in Lumparn, the Åland Islands. In the presence of P. flesus, R. harrisii consumed significantly less M. balthica <10 mm compared to when R. harrisii was alone. The reason for this was presumed to be due to the presence and disturbances caused by P. flesus, both on M. balthica and R. harrisii. It was noted that R. harrisii consumed more M. balthica ≥10 mm in the presence of P. flesus, even though the difference was non-significant. The reason for this could have been that R. harrisii tried to reduce its activity when searching for food, and thereby reduce the risk of confrontation with other species that could cause damage or even death. A total of 69 crabs were captured in the studie in Lumparn, where a clear majority were males (72,5 %). There was a significant difference in the number of females between the areas with (41 %) och without (3 %) Z. marina. The differences could have been caused by: 1. mobility differences between the sexes, 2. a habitat preference by females, 3. a large mortality inflicted upon females after egghatching, and 4. differences in activity between the sexes and the time of sampling. In general, the males were of a larger size (carapace max and average width 19,8 mm respective 14,2 mm) than females (carapace max and average width 13,6 mm respective 10,9 mm) in the whole research area. The difference in size could possibly be explained by the differences in activity by females of different sizes, where smaller females were hiding in the traps during the morning. More numerous R. harrisii of the larger size were found outside the Z. marina meaddow, though the differences in sizes between the habitats were non-significant. This studie shows that more research into R. harrisii and its interactions with different organisms, and possible differences in activity, is needed to understand the complex behaviours of R. harrisii. It is also recommended that habitat diversity is taken into consideration in future sampling due to it possibly causing significant differences in the population structure of R. harrisii, which in turn can affect the ecosystem and its foodweb.
Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment. High concentrations of MPs are found from seafloor sediments, which have been proposed to act as their final sinks. Because bioturbation is an important process affecting the burial of MPs, a mesocosm experiment was established to study whether sediment infauna may also promote MP return to the sediment surface. Thin layers of frozen sediment containing an environmentally realistic concentration (500 μm and 100–300 μm) were added to depths of 2 cm and 5 cm in the experimental cylinders filled with sediment. The displacement of these MPs, made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), by a community of common benthic invertebrates in the northern Baltic Sea (clam Limecola balthica, polychaete Marenzelleria spp., gammarid Monoporeia affinis) was studied in a 10-week experiment. After the experiment, the MPs were extracted from each sediment layer and the animals were examined for MP ingestion. The results indicated that the transportation of MPs to the sediment surface by bioturbation was negligible. Thus, in the Baltic Sea, the seafloor may act as a sink for once sedimented MPs, reducing simultaneously the MP exposure of the macrofauna feeding on the sediment surface.
