Digitalisation offers prisons versatile opportunities to promote the rehabilitation of incarcerated people during their imprisonment, on their return to society, and in communicating with relatives and service providers such as socialwelfare and health care services, housing services, and employment services. This study focuses on the Hämeenlinna prison, which is Finland’s first closed women’s prison using personal in-cell laptops for each incarcerated person. We ask (1) how is the principle of normalisation realised in the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in a women’s prison and (2) how do cultural factors hinder the adoption of ICTs in prison. Research material was collected through ethnographic fieldwork and research interviews (22 prison employees and 15 incarcerated women). According to the results, the use of ICTs diversified and enhanced internal communication in the prison and offered a new tool for interacting in prison. The prison offered a limited opportunity for video-mediatedmotherhood, and efforts were made to respond to women’s multi-problematic service needs in prison, and through utilising various digital services. However, the study shows that the realisation of the principle of normalisation in the adoption of ICT in a women’s prison poses many challenges. Furthermore, security-oriented thinking and passive resistance appeared as key cultural factors that slow down the adoption of ICTs and new practices. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the adoption of ICTs and the construction of a new prison culture that utilises technology is a long-termprocess that requires a change in practices, culture and policies that emphasise security.
Background: The digitization of health care and social welfare services creates many opportunities for the rehabilitation of incarcerated people and their preparation for release from prison. A range of digital platforms and technology solutions have been developed that offer multiple opportunities to handle private matters either by video conference, email, or some other digital format during imprisonment. However, incarcerated people have limited access to digital health care and social welfare services, and face challenges related to shortcomings in their digital skills and self-efficacy.Objective: This article assessed the significance of incarcerated people’s self-efficacy in terms of their sense of control over the use of digital health care and social welfare services. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire. Research data were collected from 11 prisons in different parts of Finland, and a total of 225 incarcerated people responded to the survey. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, 2-tailed t test, linear regression analysis, and Hayes bootstrapping method. Results: The results showed the significance of both general and internet-specific self-efficacy, which appear to be more important for the use of digital health care and social welfare services than factors related to a person’s socioeconomic back groundor sentence. Age was negatively correlated with perceived control over the use of digital health care and social welfare services.Furthermore, the study emphasized the importance of support from family and friends, as well as prison employees. Conclusions: The digitalization of prisons offers many opportunities, but special consideration should be given to how the digitization of health care and social welfare services responds to the needs of incarcerated people in terms of their integration into society and the prevention of recidivism. During imprisonment, attention should be paid to strengthening the digital skills of incarcerated people, with support provided by prison employees. In addition to providing guidance on the use of individual digital services, the study recommends strengthening the general digital skills of incarcerated people, as well as developing their life management skills.
The digitization of society creates both challenges and opportu-nities for prisons. Previous studies show that prisons’ digitization affects interaction between incarcerated people, prison culture and reduces recidivism, however it also poses security risks. In this study, we ask how do barriers to digital inclusion appear among incarcerated people in the prison context, and how do they per-ceive whether face-to-face interactions with employees can be replaced by digital services. The analytical starting points of the study are rhetorical analysis and Goffman ́s micro-sociological ana-lysis. The research material consists of 26 incarcerated people’s interviews from different parts of Finland. The results show that gaps in digital skills and access to the internet are key barriers to digital inclusion in prisons. The question of whether digital services can replace face-to-face encounters raised conflicting comments. Interviewees emphasized the importance of social interaction in their desistance, but also the benefits of digitization such as the possibility of anonymity. In addition, the research highlights the tense nature of prison culture, as well as the different aspirations of prisoners. The pursuit of digital agency can also manifest itself in various secondary adjustments. The digitization of prisons means a change in the prison employee’s role and work approach.

The issue of religious freedom while serving a sentence of imprisonment often occupies scientists from around the world. Basically, they agree that a prisoner, regardless of the act for which he or she has been convicted, has the right to religious freedom. Problems are posed, however, by the question of delimiting this freedom, especially at the level of the right to practise a chosen religion during prison isolation. The decisions of international tribunals and national courts are not uniform owing to the generality of the rules governing this issue. The initial research question that we pose is this: how does society perceive the right to religious freedom in prisons? Does a convict have the right to demand respect for the rules of his or her religion regarding diet, clothes, appearance and participation in religious services? We look for answers to these questions in research conducted in Polish society, one that is confronted by international regulations.
Opinnäytetyössäni olen laatinut toiminnan ja yhteistyön kehittämissuunnitelman, jonka osapuolina toimivat Kukunori ry:n Kulttuurikongi-hanke, Kris Tampere ja nimeltä mainitsematon vankila Suomessa. Esittelen kulttuuripajamallin mukaisen toiminnallisen vertaistuen tehokkaana menetelmänä lisätä vankien ja rikostaustaisten henkilöiden osallisuutta ja hyvinvointia. Lopulta nostan esille kolmannen ja julkisen sektorin yhteistyön kannattavuuden vankien ja rikostaustaisten henkilöiden kuntoutuksessa.
Previous studies into sex differences in aggression have suggested that in most patriarchal African nations, sex roles, and traditional beliefs have predisposed men and boys to dominate women. This circumstance has consequently restricted females from gaining access to resources that would make them less dependent on males. However, gender empowerment and traditional beliefs are not static. Ghana has undergone tremendous socioeconomic changes in the past twenty years, and has become one of the strongest economies in Africa, resulting in increased socioeconomic status for women. The purpose of the current thesis was to examine sex differences in victimisation and perpetration of aggressive behaviour among different samples of adults in Ghana, including normal couples in domestic settings, prisons, and workplaces. A second purpose was to assess the relationship between mothers’ and fathers’ use of harsh punishment on their children and their retrospective account of their own experiences of harsh parenting in childhood. All participants represented the various ethnic and religious groups forming the fabric of Ghanaian society. Study I investigated sex differences in the perpetration and victimisation from low intensity intimate partner aggression (IPA) to ascertain whether the revised gender symmetry theory would hold in a community sample in Ghana, a patriarchal, non-Western nation. It involved a sample of 1,204 participants (602 males and 602 females) who filled in the DIAS-Adult questionnaire. In order to assess sex differences in aggressive acts in prison, a total of 1,717 inmates filled in the Prison Aggression Questionnaire in Study II. The third data set which assessed sex differences in workplace bullying, the effect of level of occupation on aggression, and mental health associated with workplace bullying, was measured with the Work Harassment Scale and the General Health Questionnaire. It involved 1, 273 employees from public institutions. The relationship between mothers’ and fathers’ harsh punishment of their children was assessed with the Brief Physical Punishment Scale in Study IV, which involved 1,202 respondents. The overall reports suggested that the role of gender in aggressive acts may be better understood by examining traditional sex roles, the contexts in which aggressive acts occurred, and socioeconomic changes that focused on increasing women empowerment. In particular, the relationship between gender empowerment and aggression was highlighted in Study I, which found females perpetrating more physical, indirect, nonverbal, and cyber aggression than males, contrary to expectations of a patriarchal nation. A high educational level was positively associated with both perpetration and victimisation of IPA. In prisons, all-sex-segregated settings where individuals have not voluntarily chosen to live together, (Study II), females were more often victimised from sexual aggression than males, even though there is a very strong anti-homosexual culture in Ghana. In prisons, males used more physical aggression than females, while females used indirect aggression more than males. There were no sex differences in frequency of victimisation from workplace bullying in Study III. Occupational status was significantly associated with bullying: junior staff members reported higher levels of victimisation from bullying and higher levels of psychological distress than senior staff members, highlighting the effect of settings on aggression. In study IV, the findings showed associations between mothers’ and fathers’ childhood experiences of harsh punishment and their current use of such disciplinary techniques on their own children. Exposure and transmission varied by sex in that males were more exposed to harsh punishment when they were young than females, and they also punished their own children more often than females. The current thesis provides an analysis of sex differences in aggressive acts among adults in Ghana. The traditional view of men being the main aggressors in patriarchal Africa may be changing partly due to the improvements in the socio-economic status for women.
Tämän laadullisen opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on kartoittaa, kuinka paloturvallisuus on hoidettu Rikosseuraamuslaitoksen neljässä vankilassa ja antaa ehdotuksia, kuinka turvallisuuden tasoa voitaisiin nostaa.
This research examines how the experience of working with prisoners might expand a musician’s understandings of their professional responsibility. It is an autoethnographic (Ellis & Bochner, 2000), arts-based (Leavy, 2017), examination of a musician-facilitator’s experience in a prison art project in Finland with 4 male prisoners and a group of artists. It consists of a literature review on community music and music making in prisons, a reflexive thematic analysis of the content of diary entries, poetry, and compositions, and final conclusions. The research strengthens earlier findings that community art projects may expand the art facilitator’s understandings of professional responsibility (Solbrekke & Sugrue, 2011; Sutela et al, 2022) and direct the artist-facilitator to be more involved with their diverse local others (Bartleet & Higgins, 2018). Even though it can be argued whether community art is necessarily enhancing participants’ lives (Baker, 2021; Aakala, 2018), I explore how working with prisoners pushed my professional responsibility in a direction that is valuable for society which needs art professionals who can work in diverse environments (Sutela et al, 2022). Overall, this research contributes to wider discussions on community music and its role, impacts, ethical complexities, possibilities, and challenges in the prison environment.
Social exclusion is a manifold and topical societal phenomenon. Adolescents who are in danger of exclusion face factors that threaten their balanced growth and development. Probably, the ultimate result of the process of exclusion is to convict an adolescent of criminal behavior. In Finland, a young person is not put in prison if it can be avoided. At worst, imprisonment is proven to boost the process of exclusion and to socialize the adolescent into the prison and criminal life style. Nine-year-long comprehensive education is a statutory part of Finnish children’s and adolescents’ everyday lives, and this central role must be included when dissecting the danger of exclusion among adolescents and examining their lives before imprisonment. The task of comprehensive school is to socialize and integrate adolescents into society, and to provide them with necessary knowledge. Dropping out at the comprehensive or upper secondary school level makes socialization into society difficult in many ways, and puts adolescents in danger of exclusion. The purpose of the research was to find out, according to the young prisoners’ narratives, what they had been like, what experiences at the comprehensive school had been significant to them, and how they would like to develop a comprehensive school based on their own experiences. According to previous studies, prisoners had negative experiences at school and their educational level was lower than average. The results include descriptions of the narratives of their school time from twenty-nine young prisoners, aged 17-21. The adolescents were interviewed in Oulu and Pelso prisons. The narratives are analyzed through qualitative content analysis and the narrative research approach. In the analysis of narratives, the most significant categories representing the adolescents’ school years were the challenges of being a schoolchild, teachers’ influence over attending school, and the increased meaningfulness of school perceived after being transferred to a small teaching group. Through the narrative analysis, the narratives were analyzed as a whole, and three types of narratives of studenthood from the viewpoint of school commitments and attitudes were constructed. The end of the results section features a model of teachers’ interaction-based ways of enhancing or preventing young prisoners from dropping out of school. Most of the young prisoners had positive attitudes toward school at the time of starting school. Some were uninterested, but none of them had a negative attitude towards school. Their stories of the first years of school described enthusiasm for starting school, the joy of learning, wishing to perform intellectually, and a conscious effort to adjust to school, however, the stories revealed some hardships as well. These positive elements that enhanced school performance disappeared from the narratives as they proceeded. Transferring to secondary school was a turning point that activated nascent difficulties. Various active and passive undesirable behaviors were salient descriptors in all of the young prisoners’ school experiences. Their school work had been unstable, and interaction with adults had been quite susceptible to conflicts. While everyone’s dropout process was unique, their narratives had plenty in common. Except for one young prisoner, everyone interviewed had dropped out from school: three of them from the comprehensive school, and twenty-five from the upper secondary school. Studies and pursuit of studying did not have much focus in the adolescents’ narratives; instead, they concentrated on the school as a social environment. The study strengthens the previous results: the accumulation of problems and their intergenerational occurrence. Often, these young prisoners’ difficulties had emerged at a quite early stage and increased with their age and advancement in school. Interventions were not regarded as appropriate and had not interrupted the process of exclusion; instead, they merely estranged the adolescents from the school and the society. The study urges us to discuss methods to help the school prevent dropouts and thus prevent exclusion even more widely. The results concern not only individual teachers’ pedagogical practices and ways of interaction, but also the whole school culture. Additionally, the study is related to the question of the integration and inclusion of students with challenging behavior and various learners, as well as addressing issues of student counseling and pupil welfare work.
Data samlades in genom frågeformulär.
