This bachelor’s thesis studies progressive rock, a genre of rock music. The media part of this thesis consists of Havu’s EP record which was released independently by the artist. The thesis begins with a look into the brief history of progressive rock music and its evolution through the decades. Additionally, the thesis examines the instruments and their uses in the genre. The second part of the thesis investigates the methods of producing progres-sive rock music and illustrates the whole production process behind Havu’s EP record from pre-production to mixing and mastering. The emphasis on the production part is on examining the methods of combining elements from different eras. The last section analyses the learning process through the author’s experiences. It explains what the author learnt and how this information could be helpful in the future productions.
The purpose of this study is to deepen my knowledge about Chris Squire’s style of playing through researching his background, his technical means and to analyze two transcriptions from his solo-record “Fish Out of Water”. I want to answer the following questions: 1. Which factors may have contributed to his style of playing? 2. Which technical aspects does he make use of? 3. What kind of notes- and rhythms does he make use of? To answer the questions I’ve been using interviews and articles from the internet as well as my own knowledge and experience of the electric bass and its accessories. I’ve made two transcriptions together with theoretical analyzes of two songs, “Hold Out Your Hand” and “Lucky Seven”. I’ve been using a hermeneutic research approach in this study. My research has led to a deeper understanding of Chris Squire’s way of using the electric bass and different elements that may have contributed to him developing his original style of playing.
Progressive rock as a genre of music began in England at the end of the 1960s and its success was more or less over within the course of a decade. Never before, or since had popular music witnessed such dramatic change. Many musicians went from bohemian to megastar and, with it, became excessively rich. Most musicians took the term progressive seriously and wanted to reach even greater heights. This resulted in the development of flashy live shows and complex concept albums. The aims of this thesis were to study the genre of progressive rock, to make a process description of the concert given by the band Rock Theatre, to find out how the concept was created, and to look into the ‘Jeppis’ music phenomenon. Qualitative research methods were applied in scrutinising biographies, technical literature, articles and interviews. The development of the process from an idea to a rock theatre show is described and the benefi ts of combining an artistic process with theoretical research are summarised. One can learn through studies into the social and technical developments of society and the backgrounds of progressive rock musicians. My process description of the concert ‘Rock Theatre Plays Genesis’ serves as a useful model for others who aspire to implement bigger projects and musical concepts. My analysis of the town Jakobstad, affectionately called Jeppis and sometimes known as the ‘Liverpool of Finland’, incorporates the factors behind the music boom in the early 1970s. The result of my study reveals that the energy and rhythm of rock that blended with other music genres, generated progressive rock. It could not have been created from anything other than rock. London and the underground movement in the latter half of the 1960s was integral to the development of this genre. It gave rise to a modern, all-consuming youth culture and vital networks. Progressive rock would never have come into being without the rapid technological advances. The result of my process description shows that major concepts can be created by simple means. The analyses also reveal that the public reach a greater level of enjoyment through a carefully planned concept concert. This study shows that Jeppis clearly experienced a music boom, especially in the 1970s. A network comprising ‘kämppän’ – a strong music association – and influences from Sweden were the key players in achieving this success.
