Thekopsora areolata (Fr.) Magnus is a serious cone pathogen that reduces seed crop of Picea abies (L.) Karst. and other Picea spp. Natural sporulation of T. areolata was investigated in nine Norway spruce seed orchards suffering from severe successive T. areolata epidemics in Finland. Habitats occupied by Vaccinium myrtillus L., V. vitis-idaea L., Empetrum nigrum L. and Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, and a number of other wild species belonging to ground flora were investigated for Thekopsora areolata uredinia 9–10 times in May–September 2018–2019. Occurrence of Thekopsora uredinia was estimated in current-year leaves of the plants in ca. 25 sample plots of 1 m2 in each seed orchard. A sample of plant leaves with rust uredinia or necrotic pustules were collected from each plot. No rust fruiting stages of T. areolata were found on any of the test species of ground flora. However, rust uredinia were observed regularly on leaves of V. myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea in all seed orchards between mid-July and the end of September. Rust sporulation started on V. myrtillus in July and on V. vitis-idaea in August. Based on symptoms, uredinia and spore morphology, the rust on both V. myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea was identified as blueberry rust, Naohidemyces vaccinii (Jørst.) S. Sato, Katsuya & Y. Hirats. ex Vanderwegen & Fraiture. The uredinial stage of the rust on Vaccinium spp. were described. No evidence of natural sporulation of T. areolata on wild plant species other than Prunus was observed in Finnish Norway spruce seed orchards.
Cone rusts Thekopsora areolata and Chrysomyxa pirolata are widely distributed in northern hemisphere. In Fennoscandia, these rusts cause severe damage and great economical losses especially in seed orchards specialized to produce high quality seeds. The aim of this study was to investigate sporulation of cone rusts and factors affecting epidemics to develop new control practices against these rusts. Natural sporulation of T. areolata was investigated in Finnish Norway spruce seed orchards on Prunus padus and the effect of environmental variables on rust sporulation in 2018–19. A sample of Prunus leaves was collected from which the coverage and number of T. areolata pustules were estimated. The frequency of cones with cone rusts, T. areolata, Chrysomyxa pirolata and C. ledi, was also estimated in Picea abies cones and the sporulation of C. pirolata on Pyrola sp. leaves in the seed orchards. The T. areolata incidence on Prunus was modelled with temperature sum, rainfall, seed orchard and time of estimation. The T. areolata disease incidence was low (<30%) in seed orchards in 2018, but it exceeded 100% in 2019. T. areolata pustules covered less than 10% of the leaves in 2018 and 10–40% in 2019. An ascomycete, Phloeosporella padi, was common in all Prunus leaves in 2018–19. Low rainfall in May-June explained the low disease rate on Prunus in 2018, while high rainfall explained the high disease rate in May-June in 2019. Cumulative rainfall, temperature sum, time and their interactions were all significant variables in a disease model explaining the disease incidence, while seed orchard was a non-significant variable. Cone rust frequency was low in P. abies cones in the seed orchards in 2019. Telia with basidia of C. pirolata were rare in May-June on Pyrola due to low rainfall in 2018, but frequent due to high rainfall in 2019. Rust control of T. areolata is recommended to concentrate on Prunus to reduce the number of overwintering diseased leaves in the seed orchards. Old infected cones should be removed from seed orchards to reduce aeciospore dissemination to Prunus in May-June. Control of C. pirolata is recommended to concentrate on Pyrola in early May.
Bark beetles are amongst the most aggressive pest agents of coniferous forests. Due to this, many boreal countries have designated laws aiming to lower the risk of bark beetle epidemics. Finland’s forest legislation has pre-emptive measures targeted against bark beetles, and for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), the law concerns pine shoot beetles (Tomicus spp.). This study used data collected around 25 piles of Scots pine roundwood that were harvested in the winter but left in the forest until the following November. Thus, the pine shoot beetles were able to use the piles for breeding. We assessed the number of emerged insects from the piles and the cascading damage they caused in the surrounding forests. All roundwood piles, regardless of their volume, were used by the beetles for breeding. Highest densities of beetle exit holes were found from the parts of the log with thick and intact bark. If the bark of the log was damaged by the harvester head, the number of beetles decreased significantly. Depending on the volume of the roundwood pile, the cascading damage (fallen shoots) was noticeable up to ca. 40–60 m from the roundwood pile. Storing of piles smaller than 50 m3 did not cause excess damage. The number of fallen shoots per tree was generally below the known thresholds for when growth losses can occur. However, the study was conducted in mature forests, and it can be assumed that the recorded damage levels would severely affect the growth of young pines, raising the question of where to store the roundwood. As with other bark beetles, the role of Tomicus beetles as damage agents may change in the future, but based on this as well as past studies, the species can be viewed as a notable damage agents only around long-term wood storage sites in the current northern conditions.

Kuusen osuus on 2000-luvulla kasvanut metsänviljelyssä. Monipuolinen puulajisto on kuitenkin vakuutus epävarman tulevaisuuden varalle.
The main research problem of this thesis is to find out the means of promoting the recovery of packaging waste generated in thefast food industry. The recovery of packaging waste generated in the fast food industry is demanded by the packaging waste legislation and expected by the public. The means are revealed by the general factors influencing the recovery of packaging waste, analysed by a multidisciplinary literature review and a case study focusing on the packaging waste managementof McDonald's Oy operating in Finland. The existing solid waste infrastructure does not promote the recovery ofpackaging waste generated in the fast food industry. The theoretical recovery rate of the packaging waste is high, 93 %, while the actual recovery rate is only 29 % consisting of secondary packaging manufactured from cardboard. The total recovery potential of packaging waste is 64 %, resulting in 1 230 tonnes ofrecoverable packaging waste. The achievable recovery potential of 33 %, equalling 647 tonnes of packaging waste could be recovered, but is not recovered mainly because of non-working waste management practises. The theoretical recovery potential of 31 %, equalling 583 tonnes of packaging waste can not be recovered by the existing solid waste infrastructure because of the obscure status of commecial waste, the improper operation ofproducer organisations, and the municipal autonomy. The sorting experiment indicated that it is possible to reach the achievable recovery potential inthe existing solid waste infrastructure. The achievement is promoted by waste producer -oriented waste management practises. The theoretical recovery potential can be reached by increasing the consistency of the solid waste infrastructure through governmental action.
