Objectives The main objective of this study is to explore whether Bitcoin users use Bitcoin as a currency or as a speculative investment. By judging Bitcoin against the classic functions of money, this study can answer whether Bitcoin can function as a currency, and if its users have been using it as such. Summary This paper focuses on evaluating how Bitcoin may fulfill money’s ‘store of value’ and ‘medium of exchange’ functions. The reasonings are as follow: If Bitcoin can act as a store of value, which means its buying power could be stored to a later point of time, then its on-chain transaction volume should not be affected by its exchange price. On the other hand, if Bitcoin is used purely as a means of payment, its transaction volume could be affected by the transaction fee. Consequently, a regression model was developed with Bitcoin on-chain transaction volume being dependent variable, transaction fee and exchange price being regressors. The testing model employed was Robust Least Squares, which is a simple linear regression model that considers outliers of data. Failure to confirm either of these functions would result in Bitcoin not being used as means of payment. Such conclusion suggests that speculation investment is a major purpose considered by Bitcoin users. The time frame of sample is from July 2016 to March 2019, when Bitcoin experience its most significant volatility after almost 10 years since its inception. Conclusions The result from the tests implies a negative relationship between changes in transaction fee and transaction volume, whereas no relationship is found between exchange price and transaction volume. This confirms Bitcoin’s behavior as both ‘store of value’ and ‘medium of exchange’. Therefore, the paper conclude that Bitcoin users do use it as a currency/ means of payment, and that Bitcoin is not purely a speculation instrument.

The theory of the sharing economy has been a controversial, ever changing topic and is continuously discussed across academic research fields. In practice, the sharing economy has been integrated in various parts of our life, from short term accommodation, peer-to-peer professional services, to its most dominant sector: mobility. Ride hailing, in particular, is the oldest and most prevailing form of shared mobility, emerging from developed, matured markets such as the U.S, to the fast growing region of SouthEast Asia. In this paper, we will not only explore the motivations of ride hailing users in an emerging market context of VietNam using interview techniques and means-end chain analysis, but also further assess their association strength through hierarchical value maps. Through literature review, we draw up an interview sample of ride hailing main user groups: educated, working professionals living in urban areas. The findings of the paper show that, in contrast to common belief on sharing economy where sustainability is the key motivating factor for users and a dominant theme companies often take advantage of, ride hailing users in VietNam are not aware of any environmental benefit that the service might bring, neither are they motivated by it. They are rather more concerned with other values such as economic benefit, safety, and convenience. This is in line with recent researches indicating that sustainability might create a positive attitude towards the service but extrinsic values are what motivate and retain users. Cultural difference and context specifics might also be at play here. The study further confirms the ongoing discussion on ride hailing in a less discussed context, all the while contributing significant managerial implications for ride hailing companies when deciding their users retaining strategy as well as improving users’ attitude towards their brands.

The aim of the thesis is to propose a new way for collecting distributed data in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) which can overcome the drawbacks existed in modern Wireless Sensor Network systems. The short lifetime and large number of needed sensor nodes problems are investigated to get the major causes for those disadvantages of existed WSNs. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Bluetooth Low Energy are two new technologies considered in to WSN system design for reducing the sensor node’s energy consumption and decreasing number of deployed sensor nodes. This work concentrates on analysis how WSN can be improved in the new system. First, the operations of chosen technologies for the new system are examined to show how they meet the target requirements. Second, the energy consumption for BLE single connection is examined to estimate the life time of proposed system. And finally, the number of needed nodes for the new system is calculated to compare with the required nodes in the modern systems in order to keep both systems operate normally. This is done to prove how the proposed WSN system is more efficient than modern systems. The analysis is conducted mainly by using MATLAB software to simulate the behaviors of proposed system. The simulation focuses on two aspects: number of required nodes for covering and number of nodes for keeping the connectivity in random deployment. The number of nodes for covering the desired area is estimated by calculating the percentage of area’s fractions that are not covered by any sensor. And the number of nodes for maintaining connectivity is estimated to meet the requirement that the whole network is at least 1-connected. Both calculations are using probability-based algorithm and applied in random deployment scheme

Robotic grasping has been studied for more than 30 years, but it is still a challenging field. Today, most robotic grippers are rigid, making it hard for them to grasp and handle irregularly shaped objects that are delicate and easily deformed such as a compact disc, an egg, or an empty plastic cup. To tackle this issue, soft robotic hands have been introduced. Despite advantages of soft robotic hands, their applications are still limited to simple pick-and-place tasks. The main reason for this is their lack of sensing capabilities, which leads to the absence of information about the internal state of the hand or the interaction between the hand and the environment. This thesis aims to tackle this issue by integrating appropriate sensors into a soft robotic hand. The information extracted from the sensory readings is then used to develop a control strategy to study the interaction between the hand and objects. Experiments performed on the developed soft hand and controller board showed that the interaction between the hand and objects could be studied by using only sensors integrated into the hand. The final results also showed that this information could be used to successfully control the soft hand in real time to achieve a manipulation task such as grasping deformable planar objects especially thin-shell objects like empty plastic cups.
During the pandemic, the National Council on Climate and Air Quality of Korea promoted "Innovation 4 Blue Skies (I4BS)" to foster climate technology innovators to strengthen the national potential to solve delicate dust/climate change problems would join young innovators in Asia. The program genuinely inspired the author. Based on the older concept designed by the author and her team, the thesis was believed to be an excellent renovation to enhance the air quality through sustainable mobility, which focuses more profoundly on the user interface and experience. The thesis aimed to design a mobile application that contributes to decreasing carbon emissions or maintaining the current low-carbon emissions level attributed to the COVID-19 outbreak, increasing climate resilience, decreasing particulate matter, or maintaining the current level of low-particulate matter concentration levels attributed to the COVID-19 outbreak. The thesis applied various approaches, including co-design and gamification, to the user experience design for a specific concept, herein a mobile application, to gain users' commitment. By exploring and defining the needs and user demographic, the author designed a mobile application prototype and delivered it to a specific group of users to gain feedback to refine and modify the design iteratively. The application takes the user's location and other attributes, e.g., gender and age, on registration. It then sends the user pollution warnings when the air pollutants are predicted to be directed towards the user's country of residence. Further, the application structure is based on a rewards-based system wherein the coupons and other promotions are credited to the account. The idea of crediting a user's account on pollution alert is that if the user can see the benefits they could redeem, simply a touch away – they would be more incentivized to adopt more eco-friendly practices to redeem them. The redemption solely occurs after the application verifies that the user has diminished their carbon emission levels. The application restricts a reduction of at least 10 percent from the original carbon emission levels.

Managing Supplier Master Data (SMD) is a way to govern suppliers, enhance the value relationships with them and effectiveness in supply chain. Taking this notion, the study aims to determine how Supplier Master Data impacts supplier management decisions and what information of it facilitates decisions. The theoretical framework employed concepts of supplier relationship management (SRM), Supplier Master Data (SMD), and Data Quality. The empirical study was conducted with quantitative and qualitative research in a sequential design. The thesis had over 4,000 supplier master records from company X and conducted 11 interviews with experienced supply managers. The findings show that SMD is a tool for overall control and indirectly influences decisions. It creates a database for analytics and referencing. The impact level of SMD was low to medium in sourcing strategies, risk control and contract management, while no to low impact on supplier selection, evaluation and relationship classification due to unavailability of data and company procedure. Noticeably, the data for SRM decisions are defined by users’ demand, some are more critical than the others. This reveals a discrepancy between theories and practical use. In company X, the data were in good quality, fulfilling the need of decisions makers. Yet certain attributes should be revised to enhance usability and visibility. The study suggested improving comprehension and automation of the data and so that the company can enrich analytical insights, resulting in higher data quality and user satisfaction.
