Tutkimusprosessin tilaaja on Evijärvellä Jokikylän alueella sijaitseva puutarhakalustevalmistaja Järvi- Z Oy. Järvi- Z Oy:lle on aiheuttanut ongelmia pintakäsittelyaineiden, etenkin peittävän valkoisen puunsuoja-aineen homehtuminen.
Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) are synthesized by different precipitation techniques using corn starch, and SNP films are prepared by the evaporation casting method. The morphological study is investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The distribution and sizes of precipitated SNPs after synthesizing are discovered by these methods as well. The crystallinity of the SNPs is studied by the X-ray diffractometry (XRD) method that demonstrates reduction compared to neat starch granules, and it is changed from A-style to VH-style after precipitation. The chemical bonding of different SNPs after the nanoprecipitation is analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrates the decomposition of starch nanoparticles and the starch matrix that is related to the depolymerization of carbon chains in the range of 260 to 350 °C. The mechanical properties of the SNP films versus the temperature changing are discovered by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The water contact angles of SNP films are measured using a goniometer, and the results showed the hydrophobic surfaces of the prepared films. Our study indicates that SNPs have a promising impact on the properties of corn starch films, which would be useful in biodegradable packaging material.
The imperative challenge of repurposing recycled carbon fiber (rCF) in composite structures, due to its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly attributes, has spurred innovative research. This study introduces a scalable processing technique, integrating carbon nanotube (CNT)-bonded microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) onto randomly oriented rCF mats, focusing on enhancing mechanical properties. Employing electrophoretic deposition (EPD), rCF surfaces are effectively functionalized with CNT/MFC, probed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Modified fiber surfaces exhibit reduced contact angles, indicating improved wettability. Epoxy-based composites, fabricated via vacuum infusion, show up to 32% and 27% improvements in tensile and flexural strength. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirms elevated storage modulus and energy dissipation capability. SEM analysis of fracture surfaces illustrates robust adhesion between coated fibers and the matrix, supporting the proposed approach's efficacy. This study unveils an innovative pathway to enhance recycled carbon fiber composite properties, extending their application potential in diverse engineering domains.
Currently, petroleum-based synthetic plastics are used as a key barrier material in the paper-based packaging of several food and nonfood goods. This widespread usage of plastic as a barrier lining is not only harmful to human and marine health, but it is also polluting the ecosystem. Researchers and food manufacturers are focused on biobased alternatives because of its numerous advantages, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and structural flexibility. When used alone or in composites/multilayers, these biobased alternatives provide strong barrier qualities against grease, oxygen, microbes, air, and water. According to the most recent literature reports, biobased polymers for barrier coatings are having difficulty breaking into the business. Technological breakthroughs in the field of bioplastic production and application are rapidly evolving, proffering new options for academics and industry to collaborate and develop sustainable packaging solutions. Existing techniques, such as multilayer coating of nanocomposites, can be improved further by designing them in a more systematic manner to attain the best barrier qualities. Modified nanocellulose, lignin nanoparticles, and bio-polyester are among the most promising future candidates for nanocomposite-based packaging films with high barrier qualities. In this review, the state-of-art and research advancements made in biobased polymeric alternatives such as paper and board barrier coating are summarized. Finally, the existing limitations and potential future development prospects for these biobased polymers as barrier materials are reviewed.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is related to the progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVD); it is an independent risk factor for stroke and is also prevalent post-stroke. Furthermore, heart rate corrected QT (QTc) is an important predictor of the risk of arrhythmia and CVD. Thus, we aimed to investigate QTc interval variations in different sleep stages in OSA patients and whether nocturnal QTc intervals differ between OSA patients with and without stroke history. 18 OSA patients (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)≥15) with previously diagnosed stroke and 18 OSA patients (AHI≥15) without stroke history were studied. Subjects underwent full polysomnography including an electrocardiogram measured by modified lead II configuration. RR, QT, and QTc intervals were calculated in all sleep stages. Regression analysis was utilized to investigate possible confounding effects of sleep stages and stroke history on QTc intervals. Compared to patients without previous stroke history, QTc intervals were significantly higher (β = 34, p<0.01) in patients with stroke history independent of age, sex, body mass index, and OSA severity. N3 sleep (β = 5.8, p<0.01) and REM sleep (β = 2.8, p<0.01) increased QTc intervals in both patient groups. In addition, QTc intervals increased progressively (p<0.05) towards deeper sleep in both groups; however, the magnitude of changes compared to the wake stage was significantly higher (p<0.05) in patients with stroke history. The findings of this study indicate that especially in deeper sleep, OSA patients with a previous stroke have an elevated risk for QTc prolongation further increasing the risk for ventricular arrhythmogenicity and sudden cardiac death.
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with vascular diseases from which stroke and sudden cardiac death are the most significant ones. It is known that disturbances of the autonomic nervous system and electrocardiographic changes are seen in patients with a previous cerebrovascular event. However, the pathophysiological cascade between breathing cessations, autonomic regulation, and cardiovascular events is not fully understood. Methods: We aimed to investigate the acute effect of desaturation on repolarisation in OSA patients with a previous stroke. We retrospectively analysed heart-rate corrected QT (QTc) intervals before, within, and after 975 desaturations in OSA patients with a stroke history and at least moderate sleep apnea (apnea–hypopnea index ≥ 15 events/h, n = 18). For the control population (n = 18), QTc intervals related to 1070 desaturation were analysed. Desaturations were assigned to groups according to their length and duration. Groupwise comparisons and regression analyses were further executed to investigate the influence of desaturation features on repolarization. Results: In the stroke population the QTc prolonged at least 11 ms during 27.1% of desaturations, and over 20 ms during 12.2% of desaturations. QTc was significantly prolonged during longer (> 30 s, p < 0.04) and deeper (> 7%, p < 0.03) desaturations. Less severe desaturations didn't influence QTc. In median, QTc prolonged 7.5 ms during > 45 s desaturations and 7.4 ms during > 9% deep desaturations. In the control population, QTc prolongation was observed but to a significantly lesser extent than in stroke patients. In addition, desaturation duration was found to be an independent predictor of QTc prolongation (β = 0.08, p < 0.001) among all study patients. Conclusions: We demonstrated that longer (> 30 s) and deeper (> 7%) desaturations prolong QTc in patients with stroke history. A significant proportion of desaturations produced clinically relevant QTc prolongation. As it is known that a long QTc interval is associated with lethal arrhythmias, this finding might in part explain the pathophysiological sequelae of cardiovascular mortality in OSA patients with a history of stroke.
