Hermoverkot tarjoavat useita etuja verrattuna perinteisiin menetelmiin. Niillä on kyky kehittää yleistetty ratkaisu ongelmaan esimerkeistä. Toisin sanoen niiden suunnittelu vaatii kokemusta. Kaiken kaikkiaan tulokset olivat melko rohkaisevia. Hermoverkkomalli näyttää varsin lupaavalta tulovirtaaman ennustamiseen.
Industrial, electrical power generation, and transportation systems, to name but a few, rely heavily on power electronics to control and convert electrical power. Each of these systems, when encountering an unexpected failure, can cause significant financial losses, or even an emergency. A condition monitoring system would help to alleviate these concerns, but for the time being, there is no generally accepted and widely adopted method for power electronics. Acoustic emission is used as a failure precursor in many applications, but it has not been studied in power electronics so far. In this doctoral dissertation, observations of acoustic emission in power semiconductor components are presented. The acoustic emissions are caused by the switching operation and failure of power transistors. Three types of acoustic emission are observed. Furthermore, aspects related to the measurement and detection of acoustic phenomena are discussed. These include sensor performance and mechanical construction of experimental setups. The results presented in this dissertation are the outset of a research program where it will be determined whether an acoustic-emission-based condition monitoring method can be developed.
The rapid development and widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have made the development of AI-specific design methods an important topic to advance. In recent decades, the centre of gravity in AI has shifted away from cognitive science and related fields like psychology. However, there is a clear need and potential for added value in returning to stronger interaction. One potential challenge for this interaction may be the lack of common conceptual grounds and design languages. In this article, we aim to contribute to the development of conceptual interfaces for human-based AI-specific design methods through the idea of cognitive mimetics. We begin by introducing basic concepts from mimetic design and interpret them in the context of this thematic area. These provide some of the basic building blocks for a design language and bring to the surface key questions. These in turn provide a ground for explicating cognitive mimetics. In the second part of this paper, we focus on specifying a key aspect in cognitive mimetics: the contents of information processes. Others engaged in this field can derive value from using or developing the basic conceptual machinery to specify their own approaches in this interdisciplinary field that is still shaping itself. Furthermore, those who resonate with the idea of cognitive mimetics, as specified here, can join in taking this particular approach further.
Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) are the most widely used capacitor type in the electronics industry. However, the brittle ceramic dielectric makes MLCCs prone to mechanical damage. Manufacturing defects or damage during board assembly may cause a capacitor to prematurely fail during its operational life. Here, we demonstrate fast and nondestructive acoustic screening of MLCCs. Soldered 2220-sized MLCCs were subjected to AC voltage frequency sweeps, causing them to vibrate mechanically. Acoustic responses of the capacitors were measured before and after subjecting the test circuit board to severe bending. The results show that cracks and delaminations caused by bending induce characteristic changes in the capacitors' acoustic response. A Support Vector Machine classifier was trained to successfully detect damaged capacitors based on their acoustic response.
In this article, a non-destructive method using 3D X-ray imaging to find dielectric breakdowndefects in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) aged by high temperature and high voltage in an accelerated test is presented. In total, 64 aged samples were investigated using 2D X-ray imaging and half of them were further analysed with 3D X-ray imaging. Miniscule dielectric breakdown defects located in the MLCC active region are extremely difficult to identify solely using cross-section analysis or 2D X-ray imaging. In this study, the information provided by the 3D X-ray analysis was used to localize the defects for cross-section analysis. Cross-section analysis was performed to verify the dielectric breakdowns and their locations. 3D X-ray imaging is an effective method for detecting dielectric breakdown defects in MLCCs due to its short analysis time and high accuracy. This further facilitates failure analysis processes by providing the required grinding depth in cross-section analysis procedures.
Internet of things (IoT) and digitalization of industries are changing the skills required from newly graduated engineers. To truly master these skills, they must be included in the curriculum, and a platform on which students can create IoT projects is needed. The research of IoT and related areas also benefits from such a platform. The platform presented in this paper focuses on a simple coffee maker but applies techniques and tools which are also used in larger scale projects, thereby making the system a valid solution for education. The devices and tools applied must be selected to satisfy education and research requirements. The proposed platform is built on IBM Cloud, and it uses Raspberry Pi as an edge device. Hands-on experience with a real IoT platform brings definite advantages that may otherwise be difficult to achieve.
Corrosion phenomena have been found to inflict new types of failures on power electronics. Currently, the precise corrosion mechanisms and effects causing problems are largely unknown. A facility dedicated for environmental reliability and lifetime testing of power electronic components and systems is presented.
