This paper presents a research of factors affecting the quality of consulting engineering and the ways of measuring the quality of consulting engineering. The starting point for this study was a case, where a consulting engineering office offers maintenance engineering services to a forest product company. In this paper it is defined in general, what the quality of consulting engineering consists of The important part of the study was to find out if the customer and the supplier have the same kind of ideas regarding the quality. This was done in asurvey that was performed by interviews and questionnaires. There were 45 replies received in all. The targets of the survey were defined exactly consisting ofthe customers' and the suppliers' representatives. The research showed that the quality of engineering and the selection of the supplier are very much influenced by both the personal experiences about the service and the quality of the designs. The research also showed that the ultimate risks and threats to the quality of maintenance engineering process were consistedof problems in the source information and in the schedule. In addition a study for an indicator of the quality of engineering was compiled. An accurate use of the indicator should make it possible to control the engineering service processto achieve better quality and more effective performance.
