To provide biomedical researchers with incentives for sharing data, we propose linking the deposition of data in an institutional data repository with the option of publishing a citable data paper in the open access biomedical journal F1000Research. We propose the creation of repository management system-specific APIs, to minimize the effort required by researchers to publish their deposited datasets. Creating a standard API for each RMS, would allow all institutions using the same repository management system to use the API without requiring additional developer time. The developed APIs could also be used by other research data publishers.

Researchers could therefore gain a citable publication for their dataset, whilst increasing the discoverability of the dataset, potentially leading to new collaborations. Institutional data repositories would benefit from increased traffic as the paper is read and data is cited. This in turn would encourage other researchers to use their institutional data repositories. The broader institution would benefit from an increase in their formal, citable output, and funders would benefit from increased usage of the data they fund.

F1000Research are currently talking with a number of institutions using DSpace, ePrints or CKAN to identify suitable partners for a proof-of-concept trial.
