Web-built learning environments called virtual environments and their sub-type learning management systems have significant role especially in higher education where it is typical that almost all the actions important for a student and their studies are managed through one or more learning management system or other form of virtual learning environment. If these systems are not accessible for everyone people are easily put in unequal positions. Because of this developing these systems and environments as accessible, examining the already existing systems from the point of accessibility and improving their accessibility is crucial. In this Bachelor’s thesis written as literature review we take examine the most common challenges in accessibility in virtual environments in higher education. To achieve understanding on this subject we define the concept of accessibility and its practical aspects and explore briefly both traditional and learning environments along with their differences from one another. From the studied material we recognize file formats, lack or poor availability of accessible learning materials, lacks in subtitles and textual equivalents for non-textual elements, amount of irrelevant information, lack of support and supervision and navigational issues as the most common accessibility challenges in virtual learning environments. Simultaneously we discover that there is a lack of recent studies about the subject with hardly any information about accessibility of technologies currently used in e-learning. These findings can be useful for both developers, education providers and higher education students alike.
