This pro gradu thesis examines Alien Quadrilogy’s movie posters as a product of graphic design from the aspect of visual culture and gender studies. Research material includes seven movie posters used in Finland to market Alien Quadrilogy’s movies between 1979 and 1997. The aim of this study is to find out what kind of visual ways are used constructing gender in movie posters, how this constructing happens and what kind of genders do posters represent. Close reading and resisting reading are used as a research methods. Theoretical background lies in graphic design and visual culture. Five visual ways to represent gender were found from the research material. They are colour, framing, gaze, shapes and stereotypes. These visual ways build gender in the level of mental images and connotation through myths and stereotypes. The gender represented in reseach material is mostly feminine and stereotypical. Representations of gender have leeway until to androgyny but they can be in contradiction to the visual elements of the picture.
