IoT sensors energy harvesting

Lappeenranta University of Technology department of Electrical Engineering wanted to clarify the definition of a new technology, Internet of Things. The department also wanted to gain one big picture about energy harvesting methods that can be used with wireless sensors that are based on Internet of Things. For those who read this research, it gives a wide insight of this new technology and opportunities that it brings within. The research also gives principles of different energy harvesting methods. The knowledge of this research is gathered basically from scientific articles that are based on Internet of Things.

As a result of this research, it can be seen that with energy harvesting it is possible to build independent and practically everlasting sensors. Energy harvesting is a potential option to build a battery and maintenance free wireless sensor. However, energy harvesting methods need more research to make them more energy-efficient. That way it would be possible to gain more electricity from ambient energy sources. More research is needed in the area of hybrid use, which means combining different energy harvesting methods to one component.
