Subjective experience of the work environment in video game industry from the context of organizational aesthetics

Aesthetics have a significant role in the world we are living and in the last decades it has become a part of organizational studies. Organizational culture can be understood by using our sensory experience of organizational aesthetics. The video game industry has been one of the most successful sectors in last few years in Finland, because of its ongoing qualities in development and uniqueness. The aim of this study is to examine an individual’s experiences of the physical workplace and the artifacts in the field of organizational aesthetics. This research is accomplished by using a qualitative case study and its empirical data was obtained by thematic interviews with six employees and observation in two case companies in 2016. Based on the results from the study there is a positive impact of the physical work environment for employees’ work satisfaction and their well-being. The environment has its impact on the employees’ comfort and the physical space has its own effect on group cohesion also within the organization. Artifacts that have shown up in this study were related to community, work, and communication. According to these findings it can be said that offices have positive impacts on their employees’ creativity and well-being in the work community.
