The potential for automation of energy audit activities

The share of energy consumption in buildings is significant from the total energy consumption. Buildings have great potential to save energy. The improvement of the energy efficiency of existing properties is encouraged by energy auditing activities, whose aim is to identify potential energy efficiency measures.

The aim of this study is to investigate the current state of energy audit activities and to map out the opportunities for improve the efficiency of operations with the help of automation of expert work and artificial intelligence. The mapping of the current situation was carried out by observation and by theme interviews, in which the energy audit subscribers and experts from the target organization, Granlund Oy, were interviewed. According to the study, there is a need for the energy audits and they play an important role in decision-making to implement energy-efficiency measures. On the other hand, the implementation and quality of audits vary a lot. In the studied organization, the lack of common operating methods and model documents was identified as factors affecting the quality, and well suited and reliable calculation tools are not used throughout. Reporting is manual and takes up most of the resources of the energy audits.

Based on the current situation, the potential for improving the process was identified using a data flow diagram. The development of the energy audit process was set as a target, and it was justified and evaluated by combining theory and expert views, and by experimenting with the automation of reporting. The result of the study was that there are possible to make energy auditing process more efficient, and automation of expert work and artificial intelligence can be utilized for this. However, to enable efficiency, the initial data and calculation must first be standardized. Standardized data collection and calculation enables structured data that can be used to automate reporting. Automating reporting improves the quality and reliability of audits and frees up the reviewer's resources for expert work.
