In this master's thesis the development of press tools thatare used in paperboard forming is discussed. The objective of this study was todevelop the designing and manufacturing of the tooling more profitable, faster and the functions of the tools more efficient. Instructions on how to design andmanufacture tools are documented. During the study different possibilities for tool structures, production materials and the methods of surface treatments were examined. Metal cutting was determined as the manufacturing method and the possibilities it offers were studied. The structure of the tools was designed to be modular, so that for new tools only a portion of the components needs to be remanufactured. At the same time the amount of the tool components was significantly decreased. Easily machinable tool steel was chosen for production material and the machining was carried out in a horizontal machining centre. In the final stage of the study a cost calculation was made for the tools, in which different manufacturing stages and all components were segregated. The tools were mounted into the press and operation tests were performed. Suggestions were made on the basis of experiences accrued during this study and the tests.
