Laser cladding of a thurters steering tube

Laser cladding is an additive process in which the laser power is used to melt the cladding material to the surface of the substrate. By using laser cladding it is possible to form hard and thick coatings with good corrosion and wear resistance to the surface of the substrate. In this thesis the object was the steering tube of the thruster. The clad on the steering tube in question is required to have good wear and corrosion resistance. The goal of this thesis was to increase knowledge about the laser cladding process. Material properties and their effect to the laser cladding process were also researched. This thesis included also an experimental section. The goal for this experimental work was to find out the most cost-efficient cladding material for steering tube. Four different cladding materials, Stellite 21, Inconel 625, AISI 316L and AISI 431 were laser cladded on steering tube’s and plates surfaces and then analyzed via hardness and bending tests. Test results showed that the only cladding material that fulfilled requirements for steering tubes cladding was Stellite 21. Consequently it is the most cost-efficient cladding material to be used in the steering tubes laser cladding process.
