The subject of this thesis was to design a light made from recyclable glass bottles for the author’s future company. The aim was to produce a prototype light and to determine the factors, which affect the final product’s manufacturing and market launch. The subject was chosen based on the author’s personal interest in light and mood light design, as well as sustainable design and utilising recycled material in the process. During this project the author collaborated with Evolum Ltd.

The material was collected through an expert interview and by examining the theory related to the topic. The theoretical background focuses on the reuse of recyclable glass bottles and the life cycle approach of sustainable design, viewed through the future company’s values and ideologies. Additional aims include the assessment of the product’s positioning in the market and the roles of energy efficient lights in interior design. The operational aspect focuses on the product design process, which includes several design and material tests as well as product development based on the results of these tests.

As a result of this process, a sustainable, multipurpose and adaptable Luzia mood light prototype was produced. A preliminary cost estimate was calculated for the light to support the pricing, and a life cycle map of the glass parts was modelled in order to assess the environmental factors related to their designing process. During the thesis process, the company and its products’ positioning in the market began to shape, and additionally the factors affecting the sustainable designing process were clarified.
