The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis was to find out what kind of com-puter programs and hardware are used by the company Maansiirtoliike Manninen Oy in the planning and implementation of open-cast mining. The company’s operating methods, computer programs and the applica-tions and hardware supporting them were introduced. Also, the usability and significance of programs and equipment for the whole process were examined. The utilization of digitalization improves and enhances the implementation of work, which also has a positive effect on occupational safety and costs.

The basics of excavation work, terms and the working methods used were also discussed. The uses of the programs and hardware discussed in the thesis were described explaining why their use is useful in excavation work. The aim was to summarize the benefits of utilizing technology for the company.

The research method was an empirical study. The study was carried out using the equipment used in the excavation work and software that in-cluded Drone imaging, Trimble’s Stratus service, SHOTPlus, hole straight-ness measurement, and Trimble Groundworks 3D machine control. The material for the thesis was collected on the basis of user experiences in-cluding publications in the field and web sources.

The results of the study show that the best use of hardware and software can be obtained by using them together, in which case the utilization of information is efficient.
