Adoptiosta puhuminen lapselle : Kuinka adoptiovanhemmat puhuvat lapselle tämän adoptiosta?

The purpose of the thesis was to examine adoptive parents’ experiences and needs for sup-port with talking to children about adoption. The aim was to explore what kind of experi-ences adoptive parents have with talking about adoption. In addition, the aim was to find out what makes talking about adoption particularly challenging, and what kind of support they longed for when talking about adoption. The thesis was commissioned by the organiza-tion Save the Children Finland, which pursues children’s rights. They provide adoptive fami-lies with different services, which aim to promote the wellbeing of adoptive families. The knowledge base of the thesis includes definitions of adoption-related concepts: adop-tion, adoption process, the rights of the adopted child and openness in adoption. Previous research on the topic are also discussed. The data for the thesis was collected by a ques-tionnaire in October 2020. In total, 10 parents from Uusimaa to Pohjois-Pohjanmaa re-sponded to the survey. The research was qualitative, and the results were analyzed by the-matic analysis. The results of the study indicate that parents talk to their children about adoption quite naturally and casually. Adoption often came as a topic while discussing diversity and fami-lies. When discussing adoption, the parents know how to consider their child’s stage of de-velopment. The parents felt that limited knowledge of the child’s background was challeng-ing. Some also found it challenging how their child received information about their own adoption. Parents wished for more peer support for both themselves and their children, and also more knowledge about adoptions for professionals.
