The aim of this thesis is to find, when interpreting to a young person with a Cochlear implant, at an orthodox summer youth camp, what factors were experienced as challenges in sign language inter-preting. This thesis is a qualitative case study and it cannot be generalized. The subscriber of the thesis is the educational unit of the Orthodox Parish of Helsinki. The subscriber benefits from this thesis when, in the future, the workers of the youth summer camps would be acquainted with the situations of integration. The field of sign language [interpreters] benefit from this thesis when incubating different interpreting methods suitable for a young person with a Cochlear implant. In addition, this thesis can be used as a preparation material for a similar context.

The material for this case study was gathered with qualitative methods of videotaping and interviewing both the receiver of interpretation and the two sign language interpreters working at this particular orthodox youth summer camp. Participating observation and discourse analysis as well as Gile's Effort Model were used as research methods. The interpreted situations were divided into three essential situations at the orthodox youth summer camps i.e. camp church, lessons and discussing in groups. By analysing these situations and combining those notes with the observations made during the camp, the results say that there were three factors experienced as challenges. These factors associated with the young person as the receiver of the interpretation, and the [orthodox] terms that have no clerical solid translations made.

The results show that in this case study from the interpreting point of view, the young person's diverse amount of the communication receiving methods were experienced as challenge. Also, various orthodox terms and the lack of the clerical translations were experienced as challenges.
