Housing enabler -an instrument for assessing accessibility problems : user experiences on the usability of the instrument, the first user training and the development needs in Finland amongthe rehabilitation professionals

Housing Enabler is an instrumentfor assessing and analysing accessibility problems in housing. This instrument has been developed by Susanne Iwarsson who is professor of gerontology in Lund University. She was the course leader in the Housing Enabler training course organized by the Research and Development Unit of Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences in spring 2006. This Bachelor Thesis is ordered by the Research and Development Unit. Results can be used in further application and development ofthe instrument in the Finnish rehabilitation practice. The aim of the Bachelor's Thesis is to chart the first user experiences of the Housing Enabler instrument in Finland among the rehabilitation professionals who attended the course. Research problem was to determine whether the Housing Enabler instrument is versatile in expressing accessibilityproblems in housing. The study queried whether the instrument is suited for a tool for assessing housing adaptation needs in rehabilitation practice. Furthermore it was studied how the English training course served forthe learning, utilising and developing the instrument in the Finnish rehabilitation practice. The study data were collected after the training course by a semi-structured questionnaire to all the 17 participants, of whom 13 answered. The study was qualitative, and inductive content analysis was adapted in analysing the open questions. Numerical results of the structured questions were collected in tables and reported as frequencies. According to the results there was a need for a coherent tool for assessing thehousing adaptation needs. The Housing Enabler instrument provides accuracy and methodicalness to the assessment of the clients' housing environment. Furthermore, the instrument elicited partly the same accessibilityproblems as the clients had brought out in interviews, but also barriers that clients did not consider as accessibility problems. The development needs of the instrument in Finland brought out by the rehabilitation professionals were the contents of the communication part, and the lack of sauna in the environmental items. Use of Housing Enabler instrument was considered time consuming, but the principle was easy to learn. The systematic assess of the outdoor environment and entrances were regarded as strength of the instrument.
