Saattohoidolla tarkoitetaan kuolemaa lähestyvän ihmisen hoitoa. Sen tarkoitus on hoitaa ja tukea sairauden viime vaiheessa kuolinprosessin aikana. Saattohoidossa olevalla ihmisellä on etenevä, parantumaton sairaus ja jäljellä olevan eliniän odotetaan olevan lyhyt. Hoidon tarkoituksena on kärsimyksen lievittäminen ja toiveiden huomioon ottaminen. Omaisten huomioiminen on olennaista saattohoidossa.

Opinnäytetyön keskeiset käsitteet saattohoito, saattohoitopotilas, omaisten huomioiminen sekä hoitajien jaksaminen on kuvattu teoriaosuudessa. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tuottaa opas saattohoidosta Marian Kamarin hoitohenkilökunnalle. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli, että hoitohenkilökunnalla on yhtenäinen tieto saattohoidosta ja käytännön toimenpiteistä kuoleman jälkeen. Tutkimustehtävämme oli: Millaista tietoa sisältävä saattohoito-opas palvelee Marian Kamarin hoitohenkilökuntaa?

Opinnäytetyön tilaaja on yksityinen hoitokoti Marian Kamari, joka sijaitsee Kajaanissa, Salmijärven rannalla. Hoitokodin keskeisiä arvoja ovat hyvän mielen tuottaminen ja kokeminen, asiakkaan elämänkokemuksen ja ainutkertaisuuden huomioiminen sekä terveyden ja toimintakyvyn ylläpitäminen.

Jatkotutkimusaiheiksi ehdotamme tutkimusta siitä, miten hoitokodeissa saatetaan hyvään ja rauhalliseen kuolemaan sekä tutkimusta, miten muiden asukkaiden tunteet otetaan huomioon saattohoidossa olevan asukkaan kuollessa hoitokodissa.

Palliative care refers to the treatment of a patient who is near death. Its objective is to nurse and support the patient and close relatives in the final phase of the dying process. The palliative patient has a progressive, incurable disease, and the remaining lifetime is expected to be short. The objective of the treatment is to ease suffering and take the wishes of the patient into consideration. Paying attention to close relatives is essential in palliative care.

The central terms of this thesis, which are palliative care, palliative patient, paying attention to close relatives and coping of nurses, are described in the theory part. The objective of this thesis was to make a guide about palliative care for the staff of Marian Kamari so that the staff would share a common knowledge-base about palliative care and practical measures after death. The research task was: What kind of information included in the palliative care guide would serve the nursing staff of Marian Kamari?

The commissioner of the thesis is a private nursing home called Marian Kamari, which is located in Kajaani, on the shore of Lake Salmijärvi. The central values of the nursing home are bringing forth and experiencing good spirit, respecting the life experience and uniqueness of the clients and maintaining their health and functional ability.

Further research could focus on how nursing homes accompany palliative patients to a peaceful death and how clients’ feelings are taken into consideration when a palliative patient passes away in a nursing home.
