Grey economy is widely spread in the construction industry. This is expensive for the society. In addition, the construction industry is the leading industry in accident frequency. To extirpate grey economy and to avoid occupational accidents, many laws and regulations have been created. These laws and regulations create the framework of orientation that is given at the site. The employees’ working rights are verified and proper orientation according to laws and regulations is given at the orientation event. In this thesis, the orientation process has been divided into two parts: administrative part and orientation on-site.

The thesis studies the orientation process which is executed every day at sites of YIT corporation’s Business Premises Unit. Several orientation events take place every day at different sites. The current practice of orientation is seen too burdening. The objective of this thesis was to study the current orientation process, find development areas for the process and propose improvements to those areas.

The study was executed by first getting acquainted with theory, legislation, national regulations and YIT`s own regulations. After that the material for research part was collected by interviewing experts and making real measurements on-site. The interviews were conducted to obtain knowledge about the current state of the orientation process. The measurements were used to determine how much time the orientation actually takes at the site and what causes the possible differences between orientation times.

As a result of the study, suggestions for improvements were developed for both parts of the process. Ideas for improvement were found especially for the current administrative part of the process. By developing the whole orientation process, it is ensured that the process is homogeneous and thus, grey economy and occupational accidents can be tackled.
