The aim of the final year project was to establish where it would be possible to place a rifle range or a biathlon range in Riihimäki, much needed since a previous shooting range was closed. Noise and toxin sensitive areas and terrain elevation levels were considered. In order to discover feasible rifle range locations a spatial analysis covering the entire City of Riihimäki was carried out, and to find the most optimal location for a new biathlon range all the existing potential cross-country skiing trails of Riihimäki were compared. The most potential locations were further examined by the means of modeled rifle and .22 caliber gun noise contours concentrating on more detailed aspects such as land use plans, noise spread and shooting conditions.

According to the results, a considerable amount of noise reduction would be required in order to place a rifle range in Riihimäki, but the area of Vähäjärvi was found to be the most appropriate location. The most suitable location for a biathlon range was found to be near the Riutta cross-country skiing trail between Highway 3 and Regional Road 130. The results of the Bachelor's thesis and the material collected will be used in a further report on shooting ranges as a part of the master plan process.
