Modernien lasiesineiden täydentäminen epoksihartsilla ja siihen soveltuvat muotit

The Author did her second internship in Slovenia, at the National museum of Slovenia. The mentor during the internship was Lemantjic Goratz. He had been working with glass objects for a long time and taught the Author his technique of filling missing areas in glass. The main difference between his technique and others was that he used a transparent material for the making of molds. When you can see inside the mold, you can react to the possible problems as they occur. In this technique the attempt is to achieve the best possible outcome with molds. New knowledge and the mentor provided the inspiration for the Thesis about filling missing areas in glass. The Thesis presents the technique learned and also shows how to apply it to the real situations.

Theoretical background was obtained from guides and articles about the conservation of glass, written by different conservators. Their materials and ways to make fillings in glass were examined and presented. Also cases that have damages that are usual for glass were presented. The Author worked with them mostly in the same way that she worked in Slovenia. In some cases the technique was adapted and other solutions were discovered. In the end the results that were got with the molds were explained and also if there had been something that would have given better results was estimated.

The work was limited to modern glass objects that are in good condition, because the materials and techniques are best suited for them. There is a lot of research done for conservation of archeological glass. Information for making safe fillings for these objects is easily available. Also really complex cases were excluded, because in frames of the Thesis it was not possible to showcase them.

In this work the Author wanted to combine all her information about the subject matter and make it available for others. When one learns new things and experiments with different materials, one learns how to work with them and how to apply them to one's work. When using them in new ways, one might develop a new technique or find new materials. When these results are reported and presented for other conservators, they learn more and may develop things further. This is one of the ways how our profession develops.
