Developing a Flood Risk Map : A Case study of the city of Pori, Finland

Natural hazards are an unavoidable phenomenon. Flood hazards are expected to increase due to climate change. Increasing precipitation will cause floods especially in river catchment areas. Nevertheless, the role of human activity is undeniable. Precise floods risk maps are needed in order to manage flood risk efficiently. Flood risk maps should be sufficient to make good decisions concerning flood protection. The present thesis reviews five scenarios of flood hazard maps in Pori city and provides a new flood risk map based on flood hazard maps and flood water levels using the ArcGIS software. The situations of buildings at risk are marked in the developed risk map. The map not only shows the vulnerable buildings, but it may help in making decisions for better flood risk management, flood protection or investment and human wellbeing in the future.
