Entertainment and journalism are a part of everyone’s daily life. Therefore, it is quite peculiar that the combination of the two seems to be a somewhat unusual or even a notorious creature. This makes the subject interesting. Entertainment journalism dwells somewhere in the grey area of the journalistic field. The sub-genre appears to have its own code of laws, and quite often it is regarded as something inferior when compared to the so-called serious journalism. This thesis aims to define entertainment news – as much as it is possible. The idea is to bring forward the assumed dubious characteristics of entertainment journalism through the findings discovered during the analysis phase. The purpose of this thesis is to provoke conversation, and act as a piece of journalism critique. The conceptual framework provides a view of the research subjects (Finnish tabloids Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat), and the essential concepts involved (such as journalistic work and information acquisition). The research method applied in this thesis is Grounded Theory. In this qualitative method the researcher tags the repetitive ideas of the collected data with codes. These codes can be grouped into concepts, then into categories, and these categories become the basis for a theory. In this case the theory depicts the characteristics of entertainment news. In this study the focal categories proved to be the source and the nature of the news. In this instance, the nature means a certain communication mission. In addition to the source and the nature, also the publishing cycle defines the essence of entertainment news – though its effect is not as straightforward. The data – 339 entertainment news items published by either Iltalehti or IltaSanomat – was gathered from Finnish tabloids’ web pages during the last week of November 2018. The result of this thesis is a tentative theory of entertainment news. The theory is by no means watertight, and the true value of this study lies in the observations which form the basis for the theory. It is also important to keep in mind that the research method is qualitative, and it involves a lot of interpretation. The results should be viewed as guidelines, not as absolute and final truths.
