This thesis examines how an amendment to the Museums Act, that went into effect in 2020, has affected the cultural environment services and their communication. This cultural environment service that was previously under Finnish Heritage Agency, has been moved under Regional Museum of Lapland due to this amendment.

The research problem from the point of communication is how well the information of this amendment and change has reached the stakeholders.

Work began by interviewing four different employees from the Regional Museum of Lapland who are in charge of cultural environment services. These were the archeologist, the curator for built cultural environment, the expert for restoration and renovations and lastly the curator for advancing museum activities.

With the help of these interviews and with background information collected during the process, a questionnaire was compiled using Satakunta University of Applied Sciences e-form service. This electronic questionnaire was then sent between May and June of 2023 for all stakeholders that work with Regional Museum of Lapland on cultural environment.

The questionnaire can be considered partly a failure. Of the expected 60 plus responses, only 10 people actually responded. This reinforces the communication challenges that became evident during the thesis.

In unpacking the questionnaire, the focus was salvaging the smaller sample size of respondents and analyzing details from those instead of trying to make large statements about communication as a whole.

The survey and thesis partly failing resulted in adding a SWOT analysis and a priority listing of the most impactful and important communication acts they can implement if they wish to improve communication in the future.
