The purpose of my bachelor’s thesis was to survey and research orientation’s current state and specific training need of the District Court of Pohjois-Savo. The overall purpose of this study was to carry out the survey on the orientation’s current state and specific training need among the personnel of the District Court of Pohjois-Savo. The main purpose of this study was to investigate how the orientation period and further orientation has succeeded. A secondary purpose of this thesis was to determine personnel’s skills in information systems and their educational needs assessment at present. An attempt was made to compare how the orientation has succeeded and to compare the competence between personnel and the offices of the District Court. The thesis also aims to present suggestions to improve the development areas.

The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on the concept of orientation and its importance for an organization as well as on competencies and the development of the personnel’s know-how. Orientation’s main methods are discussed in this thesis. Competencies and the development of the personnel’s know-how are also included in the research scope of this thesis.

The quantitative research method was used in this thesis. The research was carried out with Webropol sofware’s web-based inquiry. The questionnaire was sent to the entire personnel of the District Court of Pohjois-Savo in No-vember 2015. This thesis was implemented in cooperation with District Court of Pohjois-Savo.

Based on the results of the survey, it was concluded that the orientation succeeded well. On the other hand, it is evident that there are a lot of elements to be improved in the future. The need for further orientation and specific training in different systems was revealed. Moreover, in some instances employees’ strengths were discovered based on the results of this survey. The research results also indicated that the majority of the respondents were interested in the development of the personnel’s know-how and increase in skills about information systems.

Overall the thesis was necessary while developing the orientation process of the District Court of Pohjois-Savo and enhancing the development of the personnel’s know-how at the moment. The results of this thesis can be exploited by the commissioning organization in planning orientation and developing the existing orientation process. The skill gaps and skills in information systems identified in the study can be used in knowledge management and the development process of the personnel’s know-how. The results of this thesis will be used to utilize while planning training.
