Abstract

The aim of this final project was to get acquainted with the concept of students’ communal living, especially the concept of students’ intermediate housing. Intermediate housing means a model of living between the hotel and normal living. Based on this, the task was to make construction plans for a suitable student hotel on the site called Lutakon Leidi in Jyväskylä, with services and operating environments that support community for residents and visitors.

The project was commissioned by Jyväskylän nuoriso- ja palveluasunnot JNP Oy, and the site to be planned and buildings are owned by JNP. The ideation and development of the building program was done in close cooperation with the client as the plans progressed. The ideation of the space design for the future building also had to take into account the utilization of the building programs of the existing buildings. In addition, the building to be planned on the site is supplementary construction and requires an alteration of plan to be applied for possible further planning.

The purpose was also to make short building analyses of two similar hotel buildings and to consider the plans on the basis of the source works provided, in terms of the building plan and solutions. The plans were made by using the Archicad design program and the visualizations by using the Twinmotion visualization software.

A result of the project were the concept idea of students’ communal intermediate housing and the proposal plans for the student hotel building. The client also intends to start applying for an amendment to statutory plan on the basis of the sketch plans and to present the building to be planned to the Jyväskylä City Planning Department. The project can be developed into a real project based on the sketch plans made for this thesis which was taken into account when making the thesis plans and solutions.
