The aim of the thesis was to update obsoleted building methods of allotments of Kuopio. The wishes of the client, local allotment societies and users had to be considered. The cultural-historical values of the areas were also part of the work. The purpose was also to research the history of allotments, and more closely, the allotments in Kuopio along with present building stock. The client organisation of the thesis was City of Kuopio and its department of master planning.

As part of the thesis, the history, drawings, plans, orders and photos of the allotments were studied. Relevant literature was used as source material to study the general history of the origins of allotments. A survey about the present situation of allotments in Kuopio was also conducted for the local allotment societies. The information obtained served as a basis for the update of the building methods.

As the result of the thesis, four appendices, one for each allotment area, were created. The function of the appendices is to complete the existing building methods, make the building process easier and to preserve the cultural-historical values of the areas. In addition, a full, more visual building method for the Päiväranta allotment was created as an example.
