Recognizing, identifying and regulating one's own and children's emotions in different situations is important, but also challenging for both children and adults. Children in particular need the support of adults in putting their emotions into words. During the day, you can experience a wide range of emotions due to changing situations, and some of them are more challenging. Young children, in particular, do not have the capacity to recognize or regulate their own emotional reactions. Children watch how adults deal with different emotions and follow their example.

The thesis was conducted as a development work according to Salonen's (2013) model. The topic of the thesis is related to the social and health care sector through family nursing. The purpose of the development work was to create support material for the partner Kuopion Perheentalo to use in situations that deal with, for example, the emotional development of a child under 1 year of age. The support material is intended for parents and provides information on the emotional development of a child under 1 year of age, from the perspective of challenging situations in which the child's emotions may be strong. The aim of the development work was to increase the understanding of the parents of a child under 1 year of age about the child's emotions and possible reasons behind them, as well as situations that can generally be perceived as challenging. Authors think that the topic affects the coping of the whole family, and getting more information and support for the parent could provide ways to process and work on one's own reactions in these challenging situations.
