The purpose of this thesis is to study adhesives used in the manufacture of engines, with focus on the selection of adhesives and the design of adhesive joints. The background for the thesis originated in the company’s need to investigate the adhesives currently in use, to determine optimal adhesives for the joints. The objective was to make a comprehensive background research in the adhesive joints in the manufacture of engines and to create a clear summary of the adhesives on that basis. Representatives of several sections were involved in the study and even some experts of the adhesive supplier Loctite participated. The study was conducted as an interview-, literature- and operation study. The basic ma-terial has been mainly provided by Loctite. The results of the studies have been processed and summarized in this thesis.

As a result of the study, a comprehensive research of the adhesives, their theory and use in product development was produced. The theory part mainly focused on the theories that are important for the use of the adhesives. The purpose of the theory was to give a background research in the use of the adhesives and the design of the adhesive joint. The product development section concentrated on the design of the adhesive joint, especially on flat surfaces. An exemplifying case study about the condensation and design of the flat surfaces with an analysis on the case study are included in the thesis. The production section focuses on the application machinery, the user safety and the costs of the adhesion. The result of the study were two reports, the first contains the adhesives in use, the optimal adhesives and their uses. The second report is about alternative adhesives for the needs of aftermarket and maintenance. The reports can be found in the appendix.

The reports serve as a base, guidance for future testing and testing of new adhesives. In the next phase, the selected adhesives will be tested in a prototype of an engine. Based on the tests, the report on the adhesives will be update. The final decision on changing the adhesives in the assembly can be made only after testing the prototype. On the basis of the study, the need for development was found in the use of the adhesives, in the adhesion education and in the use of the machinery. The most important proposition was, however, a transition to user safe compositions.
