The thesis inspects the processes and applications involved in the field of under-water cinematography. The Purpose of the thesis is to clarify the job description of an underwater cinematographer, and what kinds of recourses are needed when producing an underwater production. The Theory section of the thesis is compiled from theory of scuba diving, publications of underwater cinematography, podcasts, a specialist interview, and courses.

A Fiction and a documentary underwater production were produced for the thesis. The Goal was to achieve a comprehensive impression of underwater cinematography by comparing the production process, applications, surroundings, and the equipment of two different underwater productions. The Needs and challenges of the productions were compared and analyzed.

From the results it was noticed that filming underwater requires significantly more time than filming on land. Underwater environment and the prevalent conditions bring their own needs and challenges to the work and cinematography. Under-water cinematography requires strong skills in diving, so that the filming can be done safely, and desirable results are achieved. The gathered information and knowledge resulted to a pragmatic guidebook. The guidebook is meant to be an easily approachable information and advice package for film industry students and professionals interested in underwater cinematography.
