This study is thesis for the Dance Teacher degree, Bachelor of Dance at the Turku University of Applied Sciences. The study is about teaching dance to disabled people and open perspectives, what the author has made. The study collected data from the research which was made in Myyrmäki Day Center with theory of dance as an art and disabled people.

The goal is to bring up information, what needs to be considered when teaching to people with disabilities. Purpose is also to give views and tools to dance teachers who are working with them. The point is to create a good learning environment, which takes into account disabled people starting point to dancing.

There’s seven chapters in the study. First the author tells her history with disabled people and opens her thoughts behind this study. The second chapter is opening what disabilities mean. Next chapter opens in what kind of dance all the exercises were based on. Fourth chapter tells the autors own experiences. Next two chapters open the research, what happened and when and what kind of notes the author made from them. The last chapter shows conclusions and sums everything together.

From the study which was made, the author noticed that you have to take many things into consideration when you are teaching dance to people with disabilities. You have to see every student as in own individual and modify dance to suitable to them and also pay attention what kind of teaching methods you use. Teaching dance to them you have to pay attention how you show the movement and instruct students verbally. Students need also enough repetitions and encouraging.
